Rwandan poetess Umuhoza Nadine releases ‘Akanzu’, a poem about transformation and hope
Rwandan poetess Umuhoza Nadine, popularly known as Mukundarwanda, continues to establish her place in Rwanda's growing poetry scene
Emerging Rwandan poetess Umuhoza Nadine has released a new poem titled “Akanzu”, exploring personal transformation, the possibility of overcoming destructive habits and the importance of regaining hope, even after difficult life experiences.
The poem draws inspiration from a story Nadine encountered on TikTok, in which a young woman recounted the painful circumstances of her upbringing and the challenges that shaped her life.
According to the account, the woman grew up in a troubled family environment. Her mother was reportedly involved in prostitution, while her father had rejected his children, leaving the family in difficult circumstances.
As she grew older, the woman found herself following a similar path, becoming involved in prostitution and drug abuse. Despite repeatedly wanting to abandon these behaviours, she struggled to find a way out of her circumstances. Eventually, she began reflecting on her life and regretting the choices and patterns that had shaped her experiences.
The story deeply moved Nadine and inspired her to write “Akanzu”, through which she seeks to communicate a message of redemption and personal renewal.
The poem emphasises that a person's past does not have to determine their future and that, regardless of how deeply someone may have fallen into destructive behaviours, the possibility of change and a renewed sense of purpose remains.
Nadine's artistic work largely revolves around everyday experiences, human relationships and love. She considers herself a voice for people whose struggles and experiences often go unheard, describing her role as a “Voice of the Voiceless.”
