FARDC-backed forces retake several areas in Masisi
FARDC, Wazalendo, FDLR and Burundian forces reportedly retake several areas in Masisi as fighting with AFC/M23 intensifies near Ngungu.
An alliance of forces fighting alongside the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) reportedly regained control of several areas in Masisi Territory on Wednesday following days of heavy clashes with AFC/M23 fighters.
The coalition, which includes the Congolese Armed Forces (FARDC), the FDLR, Wazalendo fighters and Burundian troops, reportedly retook Miko, Katuunda, Remeka, Miano, Kaleta and Kasake, all located in Ufamandu First Groupement in the Bahunde Chiefdom.
According to the reports, the forces captured the areas following fighting that began on September 15 and continued into the morning of September 16.
Miko, one of the areas reportedly recaptured by the coalition, is considered an important military position. Forces aligned with the Congolese government took control of the strategic hill on September 15, according to the reports.
Military operations subsequently extended into surrounding areas, with FARDC and Wazalendo forces reportedly advancing toward Remeka, Katuunda, Miano, Kaleta and Kasake.
AFC/M23 fighters reportedly withdrew toward the Ngungu area, where they were said to have regrouped and received reinforcements.
By Wednesday evening, fighting was reportedly still underway, with the opposing forces engaged around Burora Hill, near Ngungu.
At 7:24 p.m. on Wednesday, AFC/M23 military spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka accused FARDC, FDLR, Burundian troops and Wazalendo fighters of launching attacks along multiple fronts.
Kanyuka said the attacks began at around 9 a.m. and targeted several areas, including heavily populated locations. He identified Kivoka, Kadasomwa and Gashihe in Kalehe Territory, as well as Kadahandwa, Nkokwe, Muko, Remeka and Kumadepo in Masisi.
He further claimed that the attacks were still ongoing along several front lines, forcing civilians to flee their homes.
