Kabila ally Henry Magie to surrender after alleged Family abduction
Henry Magie wa Lifetu says he will surrender to authorities in Kinshasa after alleging that his wife and children were abducted amid threats against his family
Henry Magie wa Lifetu, a prominent figure within the newly established Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN), has announced his intention to surrender to authorities in Kinshasa, alleging that the abduction of his wife and children was orchestrated to compel his submission.
In a statement issued on October 13, 2026, the politician, who has been residing in Goma, said he had endured months of intimidation by individuals whose identities and institutional affiliations remained unknown to him. According to Magie, the alleged perpetrators repeatedly demanded that he surrender to the Congolese authorities in the capital, threatening to expose him to the consequences of refusing through harm inflicted on his children.
“They told me to surrender to justice in Kinshasa, warning that otherwise, while I remained in Goma, I would see on social media what would happen to my children,” Magie said.
He claimed that he had initially chosen to disregard the threats. However, he alleged that the situation escalated on the morning of October 13, when his wife was abducted by unidentified individuals and taken to an undisclosed location.
Magie subsequently said his wife contacted him and that he was given a five-hour ultimatum to publish a statement on social media declaring his willingness to surrender in Kinshasa. He alleged that compliance was demanded as a condition for sparing his children’s lives.
“Confronted with the gravity of these threats, I have today made the difficult decision to accede to this demand in an attempt to save my children’s lives. To those who may be disappointed by my decision, I ask for their forgiveness. My children have suffered immensely,” he said.
The allegations could not be independently verified from the information available. The identities of the alleged abductors, their possible affiliations and the whereabouts of Magie’s wife and children remained unclear.
Magie Insists Surrender Does Not Signal Political Defection
Despite his decision to travel to Kinshasa, Magie sought to dispel any suggestion that his surrender would constitute a repudiation of Joseph Kabila or the political movement with which he remains affiliated.
The announcement followed the establishment of the FRN on October 12, 2026, by Kabila and figures associated with the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) and MRDP Twirwaneho. Magie had reportedly welcomed the formation of the new movement.
Reaffirming his allegiance, he described himself as a committed member of the political organisation, which he said had evolved from AFC into FRN.
“I love my political movement. I am a member of AFC, which has become FRN, and I am proud of it. I remain loyal to the leader, Joseph Kabila Kabange,” he declared.
He further maintained that his decision to surrender should not be misconstrued as an abandonment of his political convictions or the broader struggle he claims to support.
“Today, I have decided to go to Kinshasa, not as a man who has abandoned the struggle, but as someone fighting for independence, a proud member of AFC and a loyal supporter of Joseph Kabila Kabange,” he said.
Family Safety at the Centre of the Decision
Magie’s announcement underscores the personal risks that can accompany political rivalries in the Democratic Republic of Congo, particularly amid heightened tensions surrounding the emergence of the FRN and the protracted conflict in the country’s eastern provinces.
According to his account, the alleged threats against his family ultimately compelled him to reconsider his previous refusal to surrender. His statement framed the decision as an attempt to protect his children rather than a concession to political opponents or a withdrawal from his political commitments.
Nevertheless, significant questions remain unanswered, including who allegedly abducted his wife, whether his children were also taken or threatened directly, and whether any negotiations or official intervention had taken place.
