Rwanda has opened its first-ever embassy in Spain, establishing a permanent diplomatic mission in Madrid as the two countries strengthen their bilateral relations and cooperation.

The new mission was formally established on Friday, October 2, as Ambassador Christine Nkulikiyinka presented copies of her letters of credence to Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares.

The embassy gives Rwanda a permanent diplomatic presence in Spain and a direct channel for advancing relations between Kigali and Madrid.

Spain is a southwestern European country with a population of about 49 million people. It is a member of the European Union, with Madrid as its capital.

The country is also a major global tourism destination, known for its cultural heritage, arts, architecture and diverse regional traditions.

Nkulikiyinka was appointed as Rwanda’s ambassador to Spain June 10, 2026, as part of a series of appointments to government and diplomatic positions.

She previously served as Minister of Public Service and Labour. Before that, Nkulikiyinka had served as ambassador to Sweden and to Germany.
