Sanitation Concerns Force Closure of Inkundamahoro Building
Inkundamahoro Building has been closed following sanitation concerns, with authorities taking action over conditions that failed to meet required hygiene and public health standards.
The City of Kigali has temporarily closed Inkundamahoro Building after its management failed to address safety, sanitation and environmental deficiencies.
In a statement the city administration released on August 8, it said it had issued several directives and notices between May and August requiring the building’s management to take corrective measures.
However, some of the issues remain unresolved, including the illegal discharge of untreated wastewater from toilets directly into a wetland.
The latest incident was confirmed on August 7, according to the city.
“The building will remain closed until all required corrective measures have been implemented and compliance has been verified by the relevant authorities,” the City said in a public notice.
The city urged the building’s management to implement the required corrective measures as soon as possible so that the building can safely reopen.
It noted that many people depend on businesses operating in the building for their livelihoods.
The city also reminded property owners, managers, businesses and residents that discharging untreated wastewater or sewage into wetlands, stormwater drains, drainage channels or the environment is prohibited.
It said appropriate enforcement measures would be taken against violations in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
