Fighting erupts between AFC/M23 and Wazalendo in Walikale

Fighting reportedly broke out again on Saturday, August 8, 2026, between AFC/M23 fighters and Wazalendo armed groups in Misambo village, located in the Kisimba area of Walikale Territory, North Kivu Province.

According to local reports, AFC/M23 fighters reportedly advanced from Rusamambu, in the Ikobo area, and launched an attack on Wazalendo positions in Misambo.

The fighting began early in the morning and was reportedly accompanied by heavy gunfire, including both light and heavier weapons. The clashes raised concerns among residents of Misambo and surrounding villages, with fears that the fighting could spread to nearby areas.

After several hours of fighting, Wazalendo fighters claimed to have repelled the attack. According to the reports, AFC/M23 fighters subsequently withdrew toward Rusamambu in the Ikobo area.

Misambo reportedly remained under Wazalendo control following the clashes.

There were no immediately confirmed figures for casualties, injuries or property damage resulting from the fighting.
