AFC/M23 has declared three days of mourning after a fire in Bukavu killed 26 people, including 20 girls and six boys, with investigations underway.
The AFC/M23 movement has declared three days of mourning after fire killed 26 in Bukavu, as investigations continue to establish the cause and circumstances of the outbreak.
The fire broke out on Thursday morning in Tshimpunda neighbourhood, Kadutu Commune, and spread to Mosala Primary School in Kadutu and Nongo Primary School in Bagira Commune, leaving 24 dead.
The victims are 20 girls and six boys, while dozens of others were injured and are receiving treatment in Bukavu.
The mourning period runs from Friday through Sunday. The national and AFC/M23 flags will be flown at half-mast at public buildings and institutions located in the areas under the rebel movement’s control.
In a statement on Friday, Kanyuka said the movement expressed sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and the people of Bukavu. He also wished those injured a speedy recovery.
AFC/M23 urged people of goodwill and humanitarian organisations to contribute to assistance efforts for the victims and affected families.
The movement called on the responsible authorities to “diligently pursue ongoing investigations” to establish “the exact causes and circumstances of this fire” and take the necessary measures based on the findings.
