7 Killed, 4 Injured in Explosive Device Blast in DR Congo’s Rutshuru

Seven people were killed and four others injured after an explosive device detonated in Rutshuru Territory, in DR Congo's North Kivu province, on Saturday, September 12, the AFC/M23 has said.

The incident occurred in Rugunga village, Gikoro locality, in Jomba grouping, after a child reportedly came across the explosive in a field and began handling it. Three of the injured sustained serious injuries, while another suffered minor injuries, according to AFC/M23 spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka.

The victims were taken to Rutshuru General Referral Hospital for treatment.

Kanyuka stated that the explosive device had been planted by who he “enemies of peace.”

“The AFC/M23 expresses its deep dismay and offers its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of this tragic accident,” he wrote in a statement on Saturday.

The rebel movement warns residents in areas under its control about the risks posed by mines, unexploded ordnance and other explosive devices that may remain in civilian areas.

Residents were urged not to touch, move or attempt to disable objects they suspect could be explosive, particularly those found in fields, homes or along public roads.

The AFC/M23 called on anyone who encounters a suspicious object to immediately alert the competent authorities rather than attempting to handle it themselves.

The movement said demining operations continue in affected areas, involving efforts to identify and safely deal with explosive hazards.

“This process involves detecting, neutralizing, removing, and destroying land or naval mines, as well as unexploded ordnance or explosive devices,” Kanyuka noted.

He said residents should continue following existing guidance on the handling of hazardous devices as efforts to clear explosive remnants from civilian areas continue.
