President Kagame Attends PSG-Aston Villa UEFA Super Cup Clash
Rwanda President Paul Kagame attended the UEFA Super Cup clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Aston Villa in Salzburg.
President Paul Kagame attended the 2026 UEFA Super Cup at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday night as UEFA Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain and UEFA Europa League winners Aston Villa battled for European silverware.
The fixture brought together two major European clubs that are partners of Rwanda’s tourism promotion campaign, Visit Rwanda. Aston Villa became the latest Premier League club to join the partnership in July, following the expiry of Arsenal’s deal in June.
The Super Cup was Aston Villa’s first competitive match in shirts featuring the Visit Rwanda brand on the front.
Kagame’s attendance provided an opportunity to watch two clubs with strong links to Rwanda compete for one of European football’s major trophies.
PSG retained the Super Cup after securing a 2-1 victory.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring for the French champions in the 20th minute before 17-year-old Brian Madjo equalised for Aston Villa before half-time. Désiré Doué restored PSG’s lead in the 61st minute, securing the trophy for the Champions League holders.
The match was officiated by Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, who made history by becoming the first non-European referee to take charge of a UEFA Super Cup.
Also in attendance were Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe, UEFA President Aleksandar Čeferin, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Rwanda's Minister of State for Sports Rwego Ngarambe to name just a few.
