Authorities in Gatsibo District have launched an investigation after a woman and her two children were found dead at their home in Muhura Sector on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on August 11 in Kamatamu Village, Mamfu Cell. The children who died were reportedly aged three and nine, while another child survived.

Residents said the family was generally regarded as living peacefully and was involved in trading and farming.

One resident said the woman had been seen taking photographs with her children a day before the incident. A letter was also reportedly found at the scene, although its contents have not been disclosed as investigators continue to gather evidence.

Another resident said they learned about the incident at around 10 p.m.

"When we arrived, we found the bodies of the woman and two children. One child survived," the resident said.

Marceline Mukamana, Gatsibo District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, confirmed that the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) and Rwanda National Police are investigating the deaths.

"Investigations are still underway to establish the real cause of this incident," Mukamana told The New Times on Wednesday.

She did not provide further details, saying the investigation was ongoing.

Mukamana urged people experiencing personal or family difficulties to seek help from relatives, community leaders or trusted people before problems escalate.

She also encouraged residents to use counselling services available at health centres and hospitals, where trained professionals can provide support.
